Introduction

There are seven main public sector schemes:

  • the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS);
  • the NHS Pension Scheme;
  • the Teachers’ Pension Scheme;
  • the Armed Forces Pension Scheme;
  • the Civil Service Pension Scheme;
  • the Police Pension Scheme; and
  • the Fire-fighters Pension

The police and fire-fighters scheme are run by the local authorities but the rest are run and paid for by the government.

Quasi-public sector schemes are ones which the government owns some or all of the sponsoring company, but are otherwise identical to private schemes.
